Anyone who is using DVD's for burning data for backup needs to read this site: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
Some of the DVDs out there are pure garbage, and some are excellent. And to make matters worse, the quality of the DVDs from any manufacturer varies over time. For example Verbatim use to be one of the best brands, then about a year or two ago they put their label on garbage CMC disks. Their reputation and sales dropped like flies, and they have since switched back to using Mit and TY, which are top tier. Backing up to bad media is worse than not backing up at all since you think you are protected but aren't. Right now I have had the best success with Verbatim and Sony. I use to use Fuji, but they started using some lower quality products and I started encountering high failure rates. Maxwells use to be the best as recently as 3 or 4 mohts ago, but they have started using CMC, and the last platter I got from them was pure garbage, about 30% failure rate. The best one have between 0 and maybe 5% failure rate.
