The nice thing about being senile is you can hide your own Easter

Some of you may remember the photos that went around the net earlier,
done by a school girl, showing two plants, one watered with plain
water
and one watered with microwaved water. You can view those photos in
the
files/photo section of the list. The plant fed microwaved water died.
I was suspicious of those photos. I am a long time plant person and,
to
me, it looked like the microwaved watered plant died of over watering.
If I had a commercial greenhouse and a plant looked like that one,
that
would be my diagnosis. So I decided to do my own experiment.
I bought two small outdoor plants; fuchsias. They were small fifty
cent
plants that look very similar in size and health.
I chose the plant that looked just a little bit better to be the one
that got the microwaved water. I only watered the plants when they
got
dry. I also heated the water for four minutes in a ceramic cup. The
little girls heated hers in a plastic cup. To me that enters another
factor - plastic particles - and so I chose ceramic to keep it purely
to
the issue of microwaves.
I tried to take photos of this with my digital camera but it just
didn't
show what could be seen with the eyes.
Immediately I notices a subtle difference in the sheen and color of
the
leaves. The microwaved plant looked subtly duller and less healthy.
But very subtly.
As I continued to water each on the same day with the same amount of
water, the only difference being filtered water verses microwaved
water
I began to see more obvious differences. Now keep in mind that this
took weeks, and months, not days. What happend was that the plant fed
microwaved water, which was about an inch taller than the other plant,
initially and had one extra branch, became shorter. It's leaves
became
substantially smaller and the difference in general health appearance
became obvious. As visitors came to my home I asked them if they
could
form an opinion as to which of these plants looked healthier to them.
ALL of them picked the microwaved plant as LESS HEALTHY. Then I
explained the experiment to them and they all ended up with a look of
wide open eyed amazement.
Eventually they both bloomed, but the regular water plant bloomed two
weeks earlier and had large blooms.
By the end of the summer the microwaved plant was a good 10 inches
smaller than the plant fed regular water and the leaves were all
almond
sized (in the shell) The leaves on the plant fed plain water had
leaves at the base that were the size of a small lemon and then out
toward the tips they got to be more almond sized.
This was only about a five month experiment, and it was done on plants
that are hardy in this area.
If I did it again, I would use plants that are more sensitive, like
maybe small indoor ferns, just to speed up the process.
Also during this time it rained a couple of times and the microwave
water plant got to enjoy some really healthy water. If that had not
happened the results would have likely been even more extreme.
I highly recommend that everyone do this experiment. It will persuade
your friends and family much more than all the articles in the world.
I plan to repeat this experiment this coming summer, with several
different kinds of plants and take pictures with my 35 millimeter and
have them put on disk so I can share them.,
I was convinced before, but I am even more convinced now. I won't
even
use the microwave to heat water for a cup of coffee for my dad.
I only have one because it came with the house and I am renting. I
plan
to buy a place this year and it will not have a microwaved, except
maybe
in the garage for doing experiments with. Regarding the experiment
done
by the little girl. If I was to guess, I would say that she over
watered the microwaved plant and that, that is what killed it, not the
microwaved water itself. But I am just diagnosing the plant death
from
the photo and lots of plant experience, without talking to her
directly,
there is no way to know for sure.
