Boiling distilled water---you might boil off something, but wouldn't the DW also absorb who knows what from the pot it was boiled in? And from the contact with room air, while being boiled uncovered?

This is a confusing issue for me, as one of the things I tried early on was letting my distiller come to a boil then letting it boil for about 5 min before putting the top on it. I tried this several times and it actually caused me to get finished DW that was LESS pure, than if I just filled the thing, put the top on and let it run normally. Eventually I just started double distilling, based on the uS of the DW the still puts out. If it is below .4 uS, I use it for CS, if it is .4 uS or above I run it through the still again before making CS with it.

The weird thing that happens here is that often the first run through the distiller the DW comes out .4 uS, and so does the second run-through, but the single run .4 uS water would make yellow CS, while the double distilled .4uS DW will make clear CS.

While still curious what the heck in in the water that causes this, I have come to feel certain that it IS something in the tap water, something that more or less distills out with two passes through the distiller, but does so without changing the uS reading.

Hi Doris, perhaps I wasn't clear; if you buy distilled water from the store and boil it, you don't have to distill it again afterward, it's good to go as boiled distilled water. After all, what does the distiller do anyway but boil the water??

Ummm... a lot?

It captures the steam as it is boiling, then allows volatile gases to escape (at least a good one does) before draining the condensed steam (now water again) into the storage tank.
