The Serbian and Montenegrin Armed Forces (SMAF) Chief of Staff, General Branko Krga told Politika daily, Sunday, that the number of SMAF troops was a very serious issue whose solving should be based on a serious expert analysis. The analysis should, above all, include "an objective evaluation of security risks, in present and in future. Such evaluation should probably show that our country, in contrast to many other, is exposed to rather high security risks", General Krga said. The SMAF Chief of Staff added that the armed forces currently counted 77-78,000 people and that the Supreme Defense Council ordered the number to be cut to 60-65,000. "When we have turned over the border security to the police forces or some other institution, only then could we reduce the number by 7,000. If we introduce the professional army, the reduction could be continued by additional twenty percent. Furthermore, technical modernization would create conditions for further reduction. Our tendencies to join the Partnership for Peace is another factor that could influence the number of SMAF troops", General Krga said. Speaking of democratic and civil control of the armed forces, General Krga stated that there was enough control already in numerous elements "and there is a possibility for it to be extended. The armed forces fully understand and look forward to its implementation, which is expected to be beneficial in many ways."

In the blood donor campaign, organised recently in the garrison of Raska, around 200 soldiers, officers and civilians from the motorised brigade donated 80 litres of this precious liquid. In similar humanitarian campaigns, organised on a three months' basis, around 1000 members from of the Army from the garrison have taken part so far. Absolute record holders are Lieutenant Colonel Sinisa Jovic and Vladimir Pudja, who have donated blood 15 times up to now.

At the fourth international para-ski cup "Durmitor 2003", recently held on Mt Zabljak, four teams of 40 members took part in the event - Team from Russia, who are current world champions in this discipline, team from Szeged - Hungary, team from the Republic of Srpska and SMAF Parachute Team "Celestial Otters". Member of the "Celestial Otters" team, Nebojsa Jandric was ranked third in individual parachute jump discipline, right behind the team members from Russia, whereas the in team category, "Celestial Otters" came second. The cup was organised by the Municipality of Zabljak, Podgorica Corps command and aeroclub from Podgorica.
