Dear friends,
as the threat of a unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo looms, I am inviting you to read through the third part of the “Kosovo Compromise” cd-rom series “Kosovo 2008: Unilateral Declaration … of a Multilateral Crisis” (www.kosovocompromise.com <http://www.kosovocompromise.com/> ). With “Kosovo 2006: The Making of a Compromise” – published during the Ahtisaari process -- we pushed for a mutually-acceptable, negotiated, UN-based solution and warned of the consequences of setting a predetermined outcome for the status talks. With “Kosovo Compromise 2007: The Fast-Track to Europe” – published during the Troika process -- we argued that a compromise which would respect realities on the ground and the basic principles of international law would bring the entire Western Balkans on a fast road to European integrations. With “Kosovo 2008: Unilateral Declaration … of a Multilateral Crisis” – published during the process of a “coordinated declaration of independence” -- we deplore and warn of the dangerous path taken by the European Union in rejecting a compromise, in bypassing the UN system and in participating in the imposed breakup of a sovereign, democratic, European country. With so many red lights flashing, the upcoming days may be the last chance for pulling the emergency brake. Regards, Aleksandar Mitic Director of the “Kosovo Compromise” project
