Thank you Larry. Now that makes my error go away and I have it attached:

sim> show xq eth

  1  en1 (No description available)
sim> show xq

type=DELQA, poll=100, not attached
sim> show version
VAX simulator V3.8-1 [64b data, 64b addresses, Ethernet support]
sim> attach xq en0
Eth: opened en0
sim> show xq
XQ, address=20001920-2000192F, no vector, MAC=08:00:2B:AA:BB:CC,
type=DELQA, poll=100, attached to en0

I found over ten webpages with ideas on how to configure the networking,
but I am not suire which is relevant. I am not able to ping my gateway.
I am not able to ping my host's IP. I am not able to ping my virtual
system's IP (from other system).

Should I be using the taptap?

I may try

but I find it strange that I need to add additional software to use the
networking.
