I never knew there was a default password. I recall setting it during SYSGEN. What "modern" version are you referring to? V9.x and up? If so, it is possible to bypass the start up script at bootstrap, much like you can do on VMS, and get to a command prompt. From there you can run SET PASSWORD as I believe you are logged in to [1,2] at bootstrap and, if not, you still have full privileges to change it. Unfortunately I do not have access to my RSTS/E emulator at the moment to recall the process but IIRC, you can answer "NO" to the start RSTS/E prompt and you will be at the $ prompt.
