I used to do it for real with real hardware (MC68000-based serial board with sync interface to IBM side and DMA interface to Unibus, Qbus, or VAXBI machine on host side plus application software). I have not tried to do anything similar in the world of emulation. We used to use the COM5025 or the Zilog Z8530 in sync mode for serial comms.
