A common problem with old systems is "how do you get files in and out".
Traditional ways (if the system and/or external tools permit) are a printer, punched cards, paper tape, magnetic tape, copying/pasting in a terminal, sending data across a serial line. Depending on your system, you may also be able to use kermit, uucp, bitnet, DECnet, or TCP/IP. But what if none of those options are available to you. What if your system (e.g. OS/32 on Interdata 8/32) hasn't got a working kermit, and no TCP/IP stack? The Interdata OS/32 SimH kit comes with its own FTP server that uses Tcl and Expect to borrow the system console. Although it is written specifically for OS/32, most of the code is simple pattern matching, so it could quite easily be adapted to other systems, e.g. DEC, Data General, CTSS, you name it. I have documented the whole process in a 32 page write-up, just in case anyone else wants to add FTP to their favourite "obsolete" system.
