I can't really tell, because my mashup started before I knew about Timeline. And the potential and ease of use of Exhibit I realized even later. I thought about switching to Exhibit, but I think in this case the data is too simple to make good use of the additional capabilities. With some more dimensions (e.g. region of earthquake, amount of damage caused, etc.), Exhibit would have been the natural choice. And I must admit, I wasn't aware that Exhibit can be styled in such a way as you have demonstrated with your "Around the World" application. All the exhibits I saw (and the ones I created myself) look rather similar. Which isn't bad, I guess recognition is an important factor for usability. But I wanted to keep the simple, just-two-areas-you-can-click-and-move approach, no bells and whistles that could distract the user. I think it depends on the type, amount and dimensionality of your data, which way is better and easier.
