Yes, we have no bananas. I just found the python code there useful for a quick and dirty way of extracting lat/lon vertices from ESRI shapefiles, and thought others might find it useful as well. I take your point about the size of a US counties dataset and I haven't found the kind of coarse grained data you seek.
