Thanks. Those references helped a lot. I wound up doing a number of things, including denormalizing much of my data as a preprocessing step. Not ideal for the long run, but it works for a proof of concept, which is really what I am trying to accomplish here. Also rethought some of the UI, which changed some of the interface requirements.
