You are correct. Exhibit has the _potential_ to be much _better_ for screen readers than typical static pages, because the exhibit markup indicates more about the roles of various elements (think how a screen reader could present a facet as a list of selectable values, or of an "audio lens" written to explain how to read-aloud the description of a single item). However, we've never had the manpower to pursue this route.
