This is something that worked for me

<div ex:role='coder' ex:coderClass='Color' id='yourcoder'>

<span ex:color='#FFFFFF' ex:case='missing'> </span>

</div>

I have missing set to show as a blank space. The data is completely
absent for the record in question.

Hope that helps - am a newb but willing to try!
