One immediate change I'd suggest is to avoid showing all 1000 items.
Use the ex:showAll=false attribute in the list view to arrange for the
view to show only some of the items.  This will reduce the cost of
exhibit parsing and rendering all the lenses, and will also reduce the
time spent manipulating the DOM to insert al the items. You can use
ex:abbreviatedCount to determine the exact number of items to show.
The facets will still filter all the items and let people home in on
the subset of items they want.  You can find documentation at
http://www.simile-widgets.org/wiki/Exhibit/Tile_View   As a second
step, I'd investigate how much time it is taking to pull the 1000
items out of the google spreadsheet.  Conceivably, if you switched to
a "native" format like a json file on your server, it could get
faster.
