This is controlled by the intervalUnit and intervalPixels parameters when
creating BandInfos.
If your dots are too close together, choose a smaller intervalUnit (e.g.
Timeline.DateTime.WEEK instead of Timeline.DateTime.MONTH) and/or choose a
larger number of pixels per interval (e.g. intervalPixels:400 instead of
intervalPixels:200)

With the use of HotZoneBandInfos, you can create regions in your timeline where
the time interval is different, depending on the density or time granularity of
your events.
The JFK example on the homepage http://www.simile-widgets.org/timeline/ is a
great example of this technique.
You can see how events before Nov 22 use a large time interval, then much
smaller time intervals are used for the events immediately around the time of
the shooting.

So if your time data has some sparsely spaced events and closely spaced events,
you can make sure there is plenty of room on the display to see both sets
clearly.
