For 1, there is some expermental work in place for associating map points with polygonal regions instead of markers: you could define a suitable polygon for the "influence" of each church:

for 2 there's nothing I know of.

I have created a map of our denomination's various churches with
circle markers indicating the size of each church. I would like to
improve the map in two ways:

1) Instead of marker radius being determined in pixels (default), I'd
like to create an expression that shows radius in meters or
kilometers. This way, I can give some indication of the geographical
influence of a given church as opposed to simply comparing it to other
entities in the map window.

2) I have data for the last 10 years and would like to integrate some
kind of slider that will display marker radii changing smoothly over
time. I was able to locate an integration of google maps and simile
timeline (http://code.google.com/p/timemap) but that's really overkill
since I have no need to display a full on timeline. Any suggestions?

Thanks.
