Addendum to my original post.... I found the examples that indicated I needed to add the following line to my html file...
<script src="http://simile.mit.edu/timeline/examples/examples.js"; type="text/javascript"></script> I added this right after the <script>...api.simile-widgets.org/ timeline ...</script> line in my html file.
