Well, you could do it just like the example does. In your event data, include 
an icon attribute and point to the url where the image lives:
   "events": [
        {
            "title": "My Title",
            "id":    "id_123",
            "start": "2001-09-27",
            "icon":  "http://www.someserver.com/images/image_123.png";
        }
];

The compact painter will look for this automatically and display the images it 
finds.
You can add iconWidth and iconHeight if you want different sizes, or rely on 
iconWidth and iconHeight in your theme if you want all to be the same size.
