Alan, if you look at your html you'll see that you're pulling the map
extension from static.simile.mit.edu , which is deprecated and
unreliable. Try linking to the map extensions on simile-widgets.org
and see if that fixes things.
In general if you are having trouble with exhibit it is useful to add
the argument "&bundle=false" to the exhibit script url; this will cause
it to serve unminified js code which will yield more informative error
messages (though it will slow down the load, so you don't want to keep
it that way).

In Chrome we are not seeing the map, but we are seeing the categories
of expertise.
WE have tried reverting to old html files that we know were working
and they produce the same error.
Only error we see is in Internet Explorer when we get
Caught exception: undefined.
