What has been working for me:

For the 2.3.1 version of timeline, I have been pointing as shown below.

Honestly, from my point of view, the way to go is the new Exhibit 3.0 which 
includes better code for a TimeLine extention which can be found at:
http://www.simile-widgets.org/wiki/Getting_Started.
