If in the facet you said data-ex-scroll=false you will get an "inline facet" that has no checkboxes (until a selection is made---once you have some selections, you need checkboxes to tell you what's been selected).

Alternatively, you can use a cloud facet by setting data-ex-facet-class=cloud . This will produce a variant facet that doesn't use checkboxes---instead it highlights the selected items. However, the facet values are inlined instead of in a vertical list.
