Why not make this dynamic entirely based on the ruleset?  That is, if no 
multiline rules are defined, dynamically make bufsize 1 before 
processing events.  This seems more friendly than throwing an error.  Of 
course this is easy for me to say without looking to see how hard that 
would be to code :).
