hi all,

since 2001, SEC mailing list service has been provided by SourceForge,
with the list archive being publicly searchable
(https://sourceforge.net/p/simple-evcorr/mailman/simple-evcorr-users/).
Few days ago I received an e-mail from SourceForge that all their
mailing lists will be rearranged -- each user will be sent an e-mail
notice for confirming his/her subscription, and if confirmation is not
made by June 29, the user will be signed off from the list.

This procedure involves several issues. Firstly, e-mails from SF list
server are not always reliably delivered (for example, I am sometimes
not receiving SEC mailing list posts to my work e-mail, while they
usually arrive with minimal delay to my gmail account). Secondly, not
all list members are checking their mail folders on daily basis for
reading SF mailing list notices. This introduces a danger that a
number of SEC list members will be unsubscribed in the end of June
without their knowledge.

One of the purposes of my e-mail is to provide an early warning that
it might be necessary to verify your list membership after June 29.
But secondly, I wanted to open a discussion whether list members and
other SEC users would favor to set up an additional channel for
discussing SEC usage questions (it would not act as a replacement, but
rather as a complement to existing mailing list). One strong
requirement for the new channel is publicly available and searchable
archive of past discussions. I have been thinking of setting up a
Google group for SEC users, but perhaps list members can suggest
better ideas? Also, if there is a general opinion that a traditional
mailing list is sufficient, we can just continue with it like many
other open-source projects are doing.

kind regards,
risto
