Some ISPs, most notably EarthLink, are now blocking all SMTP requests
from their dial-up lines; that might be your problem. The other
possibility is that you're reading your mail but then disconnecting
and reconnecting before replying. That could change your IP address,
and you wouldn't be able to send.
What client are you using? You might be able to use SMTP AUTH instead.
