Thanks, both of those were setup correct. Just so that everyone knows,
the problem was that the WS4D "mail from" field had three ESC characters
in it (seems to be in the field by default in WS4D, as a clean install
had the same problem and I was sure not to press anything but letters).
This caused SIMS to say that the email address was bad, but WS4D didn't
do anything about the error; because it didn't get the OK signal it just
timed out w/o an error.
There seem to be three problems w/WS4D here (not including the ESC chars,
can't rule out user error there).
1. WS4D should check for errors from the SMTP server
2. WS4D should report email errors (including what came back from the
server) in it's logs. I checked both the standard log and the error log
and there were zero entries for any type of mail event, error or not.
3. when WS4D is unable to deliver an email, it creates an email to the
"mail from" account reporting the fact. HOWEVER; the from email address
is "Mailer Daemon" which will cause all (as far as I know) mail servers
to reject the message because there can't be spaces in an email address
(ie, the account name here). It should use the "mail from" address; if
it's bad it doesn't matter since it is already the "mail to" address.

4. WS4D should check for illegal characters (ie, ESC, Space, @, etc.) in
email addresses...heck, in all URL's. At the very least it should check
for "invisible" chars (like ESC) so that non-obvious problems are
prevented (to some degree).
PS: SIMS has "problem" logging by default, I found the source of my
errors by turning on ALL logging. Just be sure to turn it off, cause the
log grows VERY fast otherwise :)
