I dont think you actually need to check the Advertise to have Auth work.
I think that is only if you want SIMS to SAY it supports Auth in the EHLO
welcome message (I think some email clients will only try to auth if they
see auth types listed in the EHLO, but I'm really not sure)

I use the 68k 1.8b8 version, and I use Auth all the time. So I can tell
you that it definatly supports it in 68k, so there must be something else
going wrong.
You can try telnetting into SIMS's smtp port and try a manual auth to see
what happens. telnet to port 25 and type "Auth Login" you should get a
response "334" and some jibberish (the text is Base64 encoded string
"username:". Just type anything, hit return, you'll get another 334 and
junk (this time base64 of "password:" type anything again, hit return,
SIMS should reject you with a failed attempt (since you didn't actually
give it valid strings... if you really want, you can base64 encode a
valid username and password, and REALLY test it). But even a rejection
should tell you that it is ATTEMPTING to authenticate.
