Convenience, mainly. If you've got a lot of host names pointing to the same IP
address (for virtual hosting, etc.), having one A record and the rest CNAMEs
means that you only have to change the one A record if the IP address changes.
There are some caveats to CNAMEs though (e.g. you shouldn't point an MX at a
CNAME), so many admins prefer to avoid them as much as possible.
