I know the DATA event in a SMTP session needs that period (it is really CRLF.CRLF but visually it comes across as a period on a line all by itself). I don't know what SIMS is doing in its submitted folder, but if it is just reading the text file and SMTPing it to itself... then yes, you will need to both make sure there is at least a period as the body text (and possibly make sure the text file has linefeed characters in it. The standard Mac line delimiter is just a carriage return...
