There are ways to do this but I can't remember them, but on the whole 
this is possible.

I doubt this is possible in SIMS, but your could script a Finder task 
to do this, since SIMS account are just individual Finder text files 
each with their own 'last modified' date.

SIMS can't do this, the alternatives are: to write your own database 
in something like FileMaker Pro and have the students interact with 
that via a web page, FileMaker Pro then tells SIMS to create each 
account (via AppleScript). Or, if you're running OSX you can use 
CommuniGate Pro which has a cool web-based auto-sign-up feature which 
will take care of the unique usernames by itself.
