In this context, an 'open relay' is an SMTP server that allows third-party
message relays. An open proxy is a proxy server (SOCKS, etc.) that allows
third parties to use it to proxy their internet traffic. I don't know all
the ins and outs of proxies, so I can't give a better explanation, sorry
(if anyone can give a better explanation, I'd certainly appreciate it).
What I do know is that I'm getting a lot of spam lately that comes through
hosts that are not open SMTP relays, but are listed in osirusoft's and
others' open proxy lists. I'd like to block that spewage if I can, and I
turned to the list to see if anyone has any insight into whether one list
is better (or better run) than the others.
