I do this all the time for mail distribution.

The trick is to set the account to Discard Mail (in the mail storage 
options popup).

Despite the ominous sound, it will actually receive the email, mirror to 
everyone on the list, and THEN throw it out.

However, you will need to still log in and empty the mail box after you 
change it the first time. Making the change only effects how it handles 
mail from then forward, so mail already stored will remain stored.
