Trying to figure out if this is even possible to do, and am guessing it's
not. There's been a flood of spam from fake yahoo.com addresses which
have a random two- to four-letter string, then __WritersRanch, and then a
random set of numbers. For example:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Every message uses a different fake address, of course. The numbers are
often the same on all spam messages for that day, but the next batch has
new numbers.
I'd hoped that one of these two router entries:
<*_writers*@yahoo.com> = error
or *_writers*@yahoo.com = error
would work to stop them. Fortunately, most have been stopped because they
are being sent to our spamtrap addresses (though it doesn't do any good,
since they connect separately for each address, and from a different
relay each time), but a few get through every now and then. I'd like to
be able to keep them out completely, if at all possible.
Am I right in guessing that you can't have two wildcards on the same side
of the @ sign?
Just as a semi-amusing extra, this is the blurb the spammer has at the
bottom of their message:
>This is NOT spam in that it complies with federal ordinances in that you
>have notice in subject that this is an advertisement, and as uce is apart
>from spam in that you have removal means, thus following the laws. UCE is
>JUST like "junk-mail in your home mail box", but like it, has some
>interesting stuff sometimes, but for sure isn't illegal, just that some
>have put a false ominous shadow over the overall field with ugly word
>"spam" for their hateful purposes, when in fact uce is separate and legal.
They use fake (non-existent) email addresses, implicating Yahoo as an
accomplice in their spamming, have a most-likely-useless "remove" option,
use web-crawled addresses (not opted in), and steal SMTP services from
unsuspecting system admins in other countries, and they are indignant
that people use the term "spam" for HATEFUL purposes. Somehow I don't
think any federal legislation provides for the unethical practices this
person is using. But it is a little funny how they think they are being
persecuted unjustly.
