I'm by no means a DNS expert, but I have always found that I avoid many
problems (and complaints from things like DNS Expert) by always having my
NS and MX records as real IP addresses:

tempel.org. A 64.174.138.122
mail.tempel.org. A 64.174.138.122
ns.tempel.org. A 64.174.138.122

tempel.org. NS ns.tempel.org
tempel.org. MX mail.tempel.org

www.tempel.org. CNAME tempel.org.
