I've tried sending mail from
other servers to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (where 12.34.56.78 is the
public ip of the firewall) but everything gets bounced back with
an "Unknown User" error. So, I guess the question is, in the
short term, what do I do to make sure that an outside server can
pass a message through the firewall to SIMS, and in the long
term, what kind of DNS acrobatics do I need to do to make sure
that a message from [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]
successfully finds its way to & makes it through our firewall to
SIMS so that the user can pick it up?
A few quick suggestions:

1) Make sure that there us a "userxyz" account on SIMS. If you send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and there is no such account, SIMS will bounce it.

2) Get familiar with the SIMS logs. They are your friends. They will tell you almost everything you need to know abut problems on your server.

3) On the SIMS "general" page, make sure that the main domain name matches the domain you will use in your email addresses. For now that would be the public IP of your firewall.

4) Learn how to use the router. This will take time but is well worth the effort.

5) For minimal anti-spam protection, make sure that "Relay for Clients Only" and "Verify Return Paths" are checked on the SMTP page.

6) I would suggest getting "professional" help with DNS. It is too much of a black art for mere mortals like me. I have one of my domains (and its DNS) hosted by an ISP. I have a second domain's DNS hosted at EasyDNS, which is as close to doing it myself as I want to get.

7) Keep re-reading the SIMS docs. I find that I still pick up new bit from them and I have been reading them for 2 years.
