While I can't speak to the size issue, if you set your account to Storage: Discard Mail, you won't have to do anything to empty the mailbox anymore. Perhaps this combined with a a mailbox limit would work? If nothing else, it would simplify your routine.

Excellent suggestion! But sorry - no cigar. I tried this on a test account and if storage is set to discard, SIMS reflects the mail without examining its size. It looks like the size detection only works when the mail is to be stored into a mailbox - which makes sense since it is a limit to the mailbox size and not the message size.
