What are the pros out there using? Would appreciate some recommendations
I had some big problems with earlier versions of Apple's "Mail" utility (included with OS X.)
I have to say that people who were turned off to early versions should reconsider taking another look. When I first got my powerbook and installed OS X, I knew I couldn't quite make the leap (of deleting OS 9) without a better OS X native mail client. So I stayed with the horribly slow/crufty/crappy/unreliable/always crashin' OE 5 under Classic route. Ugh. I was stuck on this horrid arrangement until Jaguar shipped.
Now, I use Mail 1.2.3 (under Jaguar 10.2.3) exclusively. It is my only production mail software on any of my computers. All of my 8 email accounts come into Mail, and I ditched the last vestiges of the past.
First, it does a great job of separating the various accounts into 8 neat folders, or I can look at "the whole mess" in a master IN box. This is way better than Outlook... Plus, the interface is not clunky, like OE. It's a native cocoa app with standard smooth Apple GUI. A basic "Junk mail filter" (an extension of the mail rules that existed earlier) allow you to block specific senders, domains, really just about anybody. This is, of course, after you have been unable to block them at the mail server for whatever reason...
The only drawback (if you can call it that) is that you can't connect Mail to your hotmail account, but that is just because they use a proprietary Microsofty protocol (MAPI, I think.) In my opinion, you're better off without hotmail. No matter how strictly I kept my old hotmail addresses to myself they always got a minimum of 4 spams per day. After I setup tommarsh.net I dumped my hotmail account. I assume, since you read this list, that you have no real need for hotmail since you have control of your own mail server and can setup aliases, extra accounts, whatever your needs.
Stop me when I make one assumption too many and put my foot in my mouth...
