The easy solution is either what the OP is already doing or SMTP AUTH.
Absent SMTP AUTH, turn off 'Send on Check' and do the POP-before-send
manually. I.e. check your mail and then send queued messages immediately
after. AFAIK, the 'Send on Check' feature in these mailers is not intended
to accommodate the anti-spam POP-before-send strategy and most, if not all,
of the mailers had the feature before POP-before-send became a popular
anti-relay measure. It's there for the convenience of users on dial-up
connections, so that they can queue messages as they're written and wait
until a connection is dialed up to check for new mail before the queued
messages are sent. I suppose that it could have been implemented in either
order and it's just bad luck that all of these mailers do it backwards from
what the servers need.
Personally, I've been using SMTP AUTH for quite a while and it works quite
nicely. Once it's set up in the mail client, it's transparent to the user,
unlike manual POP-before-send.
