Running something you don't trust as root is crazy! That is an odd suggestion, given your technical accumen...
I trust it absolutely on my machine. I recommend against anyone running that code anywhere else without vetting it and adapting it to their own situation.
The need to run as root is to fiddle with the zone file and cycle the nameserver.
