Do YOU have a backup mail server and is it under your control, or do you rely on someone else? (I have a reciprocal DNS, MX arrangement with another fellow and it has worked well, but seems to need more stringent anti-spam measures.)

No, I don't. In the event of an extended outage here, remote mailservers *should* continue retrying for several (I believe the commonest number is 5) days. Thus, no mail should be lost.

Additionally, if there is an extended outage, my DNS records expire every 24 hours, and my DNS provider (easyDNS.com) provides backup MX service, so I could activate that and have it functioning normally within a window of 24 hours, assuming remote DNS servers don't cache it longer. I don't normally have this set up, because easyDNS lacks any spam filtering at all.

Cheers.
