I just had an old iMac handed down to replace and improve my even
much older mail server which is currently a little old Power Mac
6116 that is running SIMS (60MHz?, 700MB Drive, MacOS 9.0.4, SIMS
and Retrospect Client) reliably for several years.

Well, I had a Mac IIci running MacOS 7.something, with a 500 or 700 MB drive, to act as a mailserver for an organization with about 50 accounts. And not all were checking mail daily, and they sometimes got messages of more than 1 MB in size. I never had to introduce mailbox size limits.

When we set up our own webserver on a beige G3, I decided to retire
the IIci and run SIMS on the same machine as the web server, but
otherwise I think I'd have left it as it was. Nobody ever complained
about speed or similar things. The G3 now has MacOS 9.1 and WebTen
and SIMS running.

IF you really need to replace your 6116, just try to find something
like a 9500 or even a beige G3. I myself wouldn't try to downgrade an
operating system.

Best wishes, Christian.
