hello SIMS-folks, long time since I've been *here*.

So what brings my here? From looking at the Queue it does seem as
my server has (attemtedly) been misused by someone for some time. I
should have acted more resolute earlier, but now I need to take
steps in order to not get blacklisted here and there. Currently I
quite often get messages like this:

Failed to deliver your message to [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
  SMTP: Address rejected by host
  Host 'mailgw.ntnu.no' says:
554 Service unavailable; Client host [80.111.38.139] blocked using
rbl-plus.mail-abuse.org

Gradually --before getting these messages-- I have tried to increase
security a little. But after having turned on Require APOP in all
accounts, Relay for Clients only in SMTP-settings (a setting I've
almost always have used) as well as Verify Return Paths I have
reached my level of competense. The only thing I understand is that
I need to do take further steps.

First, make sure you're using one of the 1.8 versions. The latest
that I know of is 1.8b9d14.

I have three questions therefore:

How do I use RBL Server List

Enter one or more RBLs in the list, like this:

cbl.abuseat.org
dul.dnsbl.sorbs.net
sbl.spamhaus.org
relays.ordb.org
opm.blitzed.org

these are the ones I use. They currently reject around 80-85% of the
attempts to deliver mail to our server. Your milage may vary.

Actually, in the event that anyone actually will ever read the bounce
message, I make my entries like this:

cbl.abuseat.org "See: <http://cbl.abuseat.org/> Your mail to
greenbuilder.com or one of its hosted domains was sent through a mail
server that has been blacklisted for mail abuse."

How does one with ease and efficency use Black listed?

If you find that a particular IP address (or range of addresses) is still delivering spam around your RBLs, you can enter the IP address(es) in the blacklist manually:

xxx.yyy.zzz.23

or

xxx.yyy.zzz.1-255

and not least important: how do I stop being blocked from
rbl-plus.mail-abuse.org?

Go to mail-abuse.org and re-test your server. See what they have to say about why you were blocked and how to get off their list. Each RBL is a little different. -- Bill Christensen http://greenbuilder.com/contact/
