I'm not sure I'd call 10-15 MB a large mailbox... Many of my users are
magazine production workers who regularly receive large attachments, so
it's not uncommon for them to have mailboxes larger than that. Currently, I
see about a half dozen accounts that have 10 MB or more, including two in
the 30 MB range. That said, large mailboxes do indeed have a negative
impact on mail retrieval and delivery. When an account file gets
sufficiently large, it can slow POP down to the point where downloading
messages from the affected account becomes essentially impossible. I have
one user with whom took me the longest time to convince him that he should
be deleting messages from the server as soon as they are downloaded and
sufficiently backed up on his local system. It used to be that whenever his
box grew to about 50 MB he'd call me and ask me to clear it out for him. I
finally convinced him to download a copy of MailSiphon so that he could
clear it out himself and stop bothering me with something that's really a
user task and not an administrative task. I'm not sure how often he deletes
old messages now, but since he's started using MailSiphon at least I
haven't heard from him about it.
