Are you ever offline for 4 or more days? If not, don't do that.

Secondaries are evil.

I try to be never offline, but I don't know how to monitor the online status so,

Try PageSentry (maxum.com), or Whistleblower, or any of a number of other server monitoring software (or services)

Perhaps you could write a script which would work with one of those products from the remote location, and turn on the secondary mail server *only* when it discovers your mail server offline for an hour or more.

That would help protect you from spam through the secondary as well as cover you for those servers which return the mail quickly.

Ok I try for 24h even if it is a bad idea and a security hole.

One trick which may help a tiny bit is to not have your secondary be the MX with the highest number in the DNS, the theory being that spammers have figured out that sending through a secondary server will often get through when the primary bounces, and they look for the highest number.

ie:

yourdomain.com. MX 10 mail.mainserver.net.
yourdomain.com. MX 20 mail.secondaryserver.net.
yourdomain.com. MX 30 mail.mainserver.net.

This *may* fool some of them into thinking that your backup server is the last line. Then again, they might just hit all three...

are you using 1.8b9d14?

Yes this is my version, is it unstable ?

That's the latest, and it's about as solid as you could ask for.

All this is a test for me, I think about communigate pro, with spam and
virus options... (expensive)

A few weeks back Max Lyth outlined how to integrate ASSP (anti-spam smtp proxy), free open-source software from SourceForge.net, with SIMS. See http://www.maxlyth.com/whitepapers/SIMS_ASSP_HowTo/index.html . I'm testing it out right now, and it looks good so far. I haven't tried integrating the anti-virus stuff yet.
