Yes, this could be a good idea.

Another question is, why the iTCL dependency for such a simple piece of code?

The problem with all the TCL stuff is, that there are not so much people, which use it ... and be able to fix bugs or to make improvements. So it's a little bit unmaintained. :-) The iTCL stuff is, I think, used by the UI script parts. Which is used also by this example code.
