Romania will institute a Holocaust Memorial Day
By Amiram Barkat
Romania will send its education minister to Israel
as soon as possible, Romanian Foreign Ministry
sources reported.
The visit is considered a
further attempt at
reconciliation after the
apology of Romanian president
Ion Eliescu for statements he
made about the Holocaust in an
interview with Haaretz.
At a meeting last Thursday
between Eliescu and Daniel
Mariaschin, director of Bnai Brith
International, Eliescu said that his country
will work to establish an international
historical committee to study Romania's role in
the Holocaust, to institute an educational
program in schools, and to establish a
Holocaust Memorial Day.
