Calling All Youth: Exciting Experiential Trip Opportunity!
As part of our newly launched Youth4Youth campaign, we are offering 2
youths the exciting opportunity to experience life in Kalimantan,
Indonesia.
During this 4 day trip (29 Oct - 1 Nov 2007), the youth will get to meet
and stay with children and families who survive on the barest minimum in
a little village called Singkawang. They will also witness World
Vision's community development work firsthand.
Our hope is that they will return refreshed and galvanised, ready to
share their experience with their peers.
To be in the running, read on:
1. This invitation is open to youth between 17 and 25 years old.
2. Only one English-speaking youth will be selected. To apply, call
World Vision Malaysia at 03 7880 6414 (Su Hsien/Silvia) by 5.30pm, 19
Oct 2007.
3. Only one Mandarin-speaking youth will be selected. To apply, tune in
to MYFM on 20 - 21 Oct 2007, between 12pm and 8pm. When the cue is
given, call MYFM at 03 9543 3366.
4. All callers will be required to answer a few questions to be
shortlisted. Selected youth will be informed on 23 Oct 2007.

1. Who lives in Singkawang?
* Population estimated at 139,000
* A mixture of Chinese (54%), Malays (28%), Dayak (6%), Maduranese
(5%) and others (8%)
2. What is it like to live in Singkawang?
* Most people who live in Singkawang are subsistence farmers or
traders.
* Half of the children drop out of school. This is because the
schools are too difficult to get to, or parents cannot afford to send
the children to school.
* 84% of all households do not have clean water.
* Widespread poverty leads to high incidences of child trafficking
and prostitution
3. How will your sponsorship help the children?
* Healthcare: Repairs water and sanitation systems
* Education: Raises awareness of the importance of education amongst
parents, provides tuition subsidies.
* Training: Provides micro-loans and income-generation skills
training
