Stephen,
You might be interested in a very unconventional viewpoint on AGI...
I define intelligence as knowledge stored that can be retrieved. For
example, children memorize facts in school and can recite them back, and
when they can do this they are seen as 'intelligent.'
Artificial intelligence then, is simply the artificial capacity to do
this...store and retrieve information, which we already have.
The missing concept to quantum breakthroughs is artificial knowledge
creation, not artificial intelligence. It is through knowledge creation
that societies advance and breakthroughs are achieved, e.g., longevity.
Today, this occurs unconsciously. People are not even aware of when and how
they are creating knowledge. Also, it is not a rewarded skill and, if
anything, it is more of a persecuted skill. And theft of new knowledge is
commonplace in this confused thought environement.
Artificial knowledge creation is the creation or advance of knowledge by
artificial means. To do this, one first needs to understand the human
process for knowledge creation which is very simple:
1. Definition/Solution/Structure (Knowledge Context)
2. Question/Problem
3. Logical Operation (connects/structures/defines)
4. Result: Advanced Definition/Solution/Structure
5. Return to step 1
The key to automating this process is fully understanding what questions are
and how they are answered. If you look up question in Webster's dictionary,
or anywhere really, you get nonsensical definitions like 'To answer a
question.' The problem is that no one knows what questions are. They just
take for granted that they exist.
A question is a perceived lack of knowledge structure or logic. By
structuring questions we answer them. By perceiving and structuring
questions in an automated way, we automate knowledge creation.
This is the skinny version of what I believe to be the answer that everyone
is looking for in many forms, e.g., the realization of AGI, a new level of
consciousness, singularity, the grand idea, and many other concepts all
hinge on this one concept. And whoever solves longevity, will solve it
through knowledge creation, not artificial intelligence or AGI.
I firmly believe I have already solved this in a conceptual sense, but I
don't have the capacity to create technology that leverages this. It is a
very difficult technological problem to solve because it requires a central
social knowledge base and very stringent language constructs.
I've got lots more info if you're interested or have specific questions.
Kind Regards,

Hi Bruce.
Since the early 1970's I've had as my life goal participation in
technologies that would lead either to Life Extension or to Artificial
Intelligence, on the theory that if one of these is achieved, the other will
follow in my extended lifetime. My confidence has grown over the years as
others have taken up these goals and some, e.g. Kurtzweil have explored the
connections between them.
With a gift for programming rather than microbiology, I have finally gotten
myself in a position where I can pursue AI research of my own ideas without
need of a salary. And having taken mega-vitamin supplements since the
1970's, getting lots of aerobic exercise, and holding our body weight well
below our set-points (no free-feeding), my wife and I hope to live well into
our 90's which should be sufficient to witness the Singuarity.
I am quite interested in these two topics and their connection.

Subject: [singularity] Poll = AGI Motivation / Life Extension?
In June 2006, I started a topic called "Viability of AGI for Life
Extension & Singularity" which grew to 252 posts. Lively discussion,
including updates on Novamente here:
http://www.imminst.org/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=11&t=11197
Along these lines, I was wondering the general motivation / attitude of
[singularity] list subscribers toward AGI as it relates to Life Extension.
If interested, please answer:
My Life Extension motivation is...
- 100% of the reason why I'm interested in AGI+Singularity
- somewhere between 0 and 100%
AND / OR
I'm interested in AGI+Singularity because I...
- find AGI an interesting puzzle
- want to save the world
- want to ____
Thanks for playing!
Bruce
