Does anyone know what Bill Gates thinks about the singularity? (Or for that matter, other great philanthropists.)
Yes, I too have wondered why Singularity efforts have not received more funding. There are a lot of very rich high-tech zillionaires who want to give to charity but literally don't know what to give to. Take a look at Steve Kirsch's site, including this http://www.kirschfoundation.org/who/reflection_4.html . Kirsch seems like a outstanding example of well-considered Silicon Valley philanthropy -- http://www.kirschfoundation.org/done/accomplish.html -- ask yourself if he is a potential Singularity donor. These people don't seem part of the well-oiled machine which funnels donations from "old money" to hospitals, museums, etc. Some pour huge amounts into space flight, including efforts which do not seem commercially viable. Why has the singularity and AGI not triggered such an interest? Thiel's donations to SIAI seem like the exception which highlights the rule.
