I have been reading hundreds of megabytes of BCI research recently; yesterday I was discussing with some others the possibility of doing semiconductor manufacturing in my own home (well, outside of it), and the deposition processes required to build the microelectrode arrays are more than possible (the CVD part is going to be a pain, however). Anyway, as clearly as I see the path to "open source brain implants" and encouraging a grassroots community of such users, the problem I forsee is that immediate brain enhancement softwares are not as apparent. It will probably come from lots of experimentation in understanding each person's brain. It might turn out that the first people who are able to run software on brain implants (or at least interpret signals, or send signals) are going to be the programmers that can work with their own mind, so that they can custom-make software for themselves. The first chip that I want to make for myself is going to be something like http://supermemo.com/ so that I can increase the rate of item consumption per day. I tend to max out at 1500/day, and even then it's difficult to get through so many items. Other interesting ideas include vision-chips, like the 1999 team led by a guy now at Harvard (I think) that were able to hack into a cat's visual cortex and figure out what the cat was seeing (amazing). Other ideas include information input/output, so that we can recover from the cesspool of noise that you recently pointed out in your wta-talk post re: your birthday ( I wrote a long response, but haven't sent it yet since it's obviously not in the same spirit in which you sent your own email ), etc. etc. - Bryan ----- This list is sponsored by AGIRI: http://www.agiri.org/email To unsubscribe or change your options, please go to: http://v2.listbox.com/member/?member_id=4007604&id_secret=76313124-64f178
